(the definite article)

The definite article in Arabic is ⟨أَلْ⟩ /al/ and is prefixed to the noun. The hamza is ⟨هَمْزَةُ ٱلْوَصْلِ⟩ meaning it disappears when it follows another word. When the definite article is prefixed to a word which begins with one of the so-called sun letters, the ‘l’ assimilates to it
