Scotland’s Alcohol Prices Rise: MUP Increased by 30%

MUP increase of 30% in Scotland

Monday 30th September 2024

The minimum unit price (MUP) for alcohol has increased by 30% in Scotland from Monday 30th September, rising from 50p to 65p.

Alcohol licensing is a devolved matter in the United Kingdom. Scotland introduced a MUP of 50p per unit on 1 May 2018. Wales introduced the same MUP as Scotland on 2 March 2020. As of 30th September 2024, England and Northern Ireland have not introduced MUP

Official statistics from the National Records of Scotland published 10 September 2024 that there were “1,277 alcohol-specific deaths registered in Scotland in 2023”, an increase of one death from 2022 and the highest number of alcohol-specific deaths registered in Scotland since 2008.

What is MUP

Minimum unit pricing (MUP) sets a baseline at which a unit of alcohol can be sold. According to the Alcohol Health Alliance, a 2.5 litre bottle of cidre, which contains 19 units of alcohol, can be purchased in England at £3.59, but in Wales would cost £9.50 (19x50p), now in Scotland at least £12.35 (19x65p).
